After Republican South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott gave a speech in response to President Joe Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress Wednesday night, “Uncle Tim” trended on Twitter — despite the trend appearing to violate the platform’s policies.
According to Twitter’s policy on trends, a topic may be prevented from trending if it violates the Twitter rules. One of those rules includes the “hateful conduct policy.”
“You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease,” the hateful conduct policy reads. “You also may not use your username, display name, or profile bio to engage in abusive behavior, such as targeted harassment or expressing hate towards a person, group, or protected category.”
