Bad Ass Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell Brings Down The House: “Your War Is Here… You Don’t Have To Go Searching For It… Your People Are Afraid”

by Mac Slavo
SHTF Plan

Elite Navy Seal operator Marcus Luttrel, whose courage and that of his unit are depicted in the movie Lone Survivor, delivers a rousing speech to the GOP convention in Cleveland Monday night.

At one point Luttrel appears to get slightly perturbed with the teleprompter, to which he says “I’m so used to speaking from the heart that when I have to read this it goes wrong, so I’m just gonna go.”

The only way we survive this is together… in order for any life to matter, we all have to matter…

To the next generation… your war is here… you don’t have to go searching for it… your people are afraid…

Who among you will love something more than you love yourself?

We Need More Borders and More States

by Ryan McMaken
Mises.org

In the context of trade and immigration, borders are often discussed as a means of excluding foreign workers and foreign goods. In one way of thinking, borders provide an opportunity for states to exclude private actors such as workers, merchants, and entrepreneurs. On the other hand, borders can also serve a far more endearing function, and this is found in the fact that borders represent the limits of a state’s power. That is, while borders may exclude goods and people, a state’s borders also often exclude other states.

For example, East Germany’s border with West Germany represented the limits of the East German police state, beyond which the power of the Stasi to kidnap, torture, and imprison peaceful people was far more limited than it was within its native jurisdiction. The West German border acted to contain the East German state.

Never Get Busted: Ex-Cop Reveals How Cops Know You’re Lying

by Chris Campbell
Laissez Faire Books

I have absolutely nothing against the police and, for that matter, honest police work.

There are just as many, if not more, good people in blue suits (and even jackboots) as there are those who wish only to cause harm. I’m sure of it.

And, of course, a service which protects the innocent, hurt and downtrodden is an integral aspect of any civilized society. No matter how spiritually or mentally advanced the society, there will always be a place for such an admirable profession, if done with integrity and with violence used as the last resort.

China’s Local Debt Problem Goes Global

by Christopher Langner
Bloomberg.com

A very local problem in China is being exported at an alarming rate.

Debt from special-purpose vehicles linked to municipal and provincial governments — leverage that central authorities are trying (unsuccessfully) to extinguish — is becoming more common in overseas markets. What’s worse, lately it’s been the weakest cities and provinces panhandling to international investors.

Since June, as many as six local government financing vehicles have sold dollar bonds, bringing the total issued by such entities to at least $4 billion this year, just shy of the record $4.1 billion logged in all of 2015. Three offerings were scored below investment grade by Fitch, whereas prior to 2016, only one junk security of its kind had surfaced internationally.

Mish Talk

Within a week, Erdogan will be dictator of Turkey (assuming he doesn’t deserve that title already).

The purge of anyone and everyone suspected of being against Erdogan reached a new phase today as Licenses of 21,000 Turkish Teachers Have Been Revoked.

Reuters reports Licenses of 21,000 Turkish Teachers Have Been Revoked.

Turkey’s education ministry has revoked the licenses of 21,000 teachers working in private institutions, an official at the ministry told Reuters on Tuesday, part of an expanding government crackdown following a failed coup attempt.

How To Invest In Gold And Have It Pay You Income

by Zach Scheidt
Daily Reckoning

Since early 2016, gold has been one of the hottest-performing commodities in the market. Gold is up nearly 25% year to date, and the reasons why should not be a surprise.

But before I get into the bullish case for gold, I must make one thing clear. Longtime readers know that I am no basement-dwelling gold bug. I don’t hide bars in my backyard waiting for the Apocalypse, and I don’t consider gold a good long-term investment.

Simply put, when it comes to investing, I look for well-run companies and nice fat dividends. That’s where physical gold falls short. It doesn’t pay a dividend.

I do, however, find one subniche in gold to be a great way to make short- and medium-term profits. And in a moment, I’ll share the details.

Merica is Being Divided and Conquered Into Oblivion

by Michael Krieger
Liberty Blitzkrieg

Or take the right to vote. In principle, it is a great privilege. In practice, as recent history has repeatedly shown, the right to vote, by itself, is no guarantee of liberty. Therefore, if you wish to avoid dictatorship by referendum, break up modern society’s merely functional collectives into self-governing, voluntarily co-operating groups, capable of functioning outside the bureaucratic systems of Big Business and Big Government. – Aldous Huxley, in Brave New World Revisited (1958)

The single event that changed my life more than any other was TARP, aka the banker bailouts. The unfairness, extreme greed and selfishness with which the status quo bailed out financial criminals while leaving the public high and dry changed me forever. When it comes to shaping American history, it is equal in importance to the attacks of 9/11.

The fascinating situation in the silver market is something that you referred to in yesterday on KWN…

China Plans Military Exercise in South China Sea

by Oil Price
Financial Sense

A week after a Hague tribunal ruled against its territorial claims to 80 percent of the South China Sea, Beijing is organizing military exercises in the area. A zone to the southeast of the island of Hainan will be closed until Thursday for the exercises. No further details were released.

China rejected the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s ruling from July 11, saying it does not recognize its authority and will continue to pursue its territorial interests, which, according to the court, have so far included illegally building artificial islands and disrupting fishing and hydrocarbon exploration in the basin.

The case that was brought in front of the Hague-based court was initiated by the Philippines, which, like other countries around the South China Sea, among them Taiwan and Vietnam, has claims to it.

The Peak Oil Paradox Revisited

by Raul I. Meijer
Market Oracle

It’s been a while since we posted an article by our friend Euan Mearns, who was active at The Oil Drum at the same time Nicole and I were. Is it really 11 years ago that started, and almost 9 since we left? You know the drill: we ‘departed’ because they didn’t want us to cover finance, which we said was the more immediate crisis, yada yada. Euan stayed on for longer, and the once unequalled Oil Drum is no more.

On one of our long tours, which were based around Nicole’s brilliant public speaking engagements, we went to see Euan in Scotland, he teaches at Aberdeen University. I think it was 2011?! An honor. Anyway, always a friend.

Trump is Said to Be Ignorant About National Security, but Maybe That’s Good

by Daily Bell Staff
The Daily Bell

The trouble with Trump and national security … Trump is consistent only in his inconsistency on national security issues … There are the growing challenges abroad — the rising threat of ISIS, the resurgence of al Qaeda, the menace of Putinism and a newly aggressive China, all of which should mean the party historically most trusted on national security would make the crumbling world a special feature of its electoral appeal. But no. Here’s the trouble: Donald Trump not only knows nothing about national security, he doesn’t care to know. – CNN

This is a strong and damning article by Danielle Pletka, senior vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute.

The Institute is known as a conservative – though “compassionate” – think tank. But from what we can tell the gulf is wide and deep between modest libertarian entities like DB and looming “conservative” facilities like AEI.

As an anarcho-libertarian publication, DB takes the stance that government is basically the problem, not the solution.

The Problem with Socialism

by Thomas J. DiLorenzo
Mises.org

A quarter of a century after the spectacular collapse of socialism in the Soviet empire, a large segment of the “millennial” generation (those born between 1982 and 2004) thinks socialism should be the wave of their future. A 2016 Pew Foundation poll found that 69 percent of voters under the age of 30 expressed “a willingness to vote for a socialist president,” and a 2015 “YouGov.com” poll revealed that 43 percent of young Americans between 18 had 29 had a “favorable” opinion of socialism” and prefer it to capitalism. Who says the public schools aren’t teaching the kids anything these days?

A very large segment of the younger generation obviously finds promises of “free” education, health care, and groceries promised by socialist political demagogues like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton to be quite appealing.

Austria presidential election take II is coming up on October 2.

It’s a rematch of the May 22 runoff that pitted anti-immigration candidate Norbert Hofer of the FPÖ party against Alexander Van der Bellen of the Greens.

In Austria, the top two candidates go to round two of the elections if no one wins a clear majority in round one.

Round two of the election was the first since word War II in which both the center-right and center-left candidates were knocked out in the first round.

Anti-Tax Crusader Grover Norquist on Trump and a ‘Weird’ Drink in Cleveland

Trump’s tax plan can be squared with House Republicans’, Norquist says

by Robert Schroeder
Market Watch

CLEVELAND (MarketWatch) — Anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist didn’t seem sure if he was enjoying his drink at a party in Cleveland. But Donald Trump’s tax plan? Just fine, thank you.

Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform, was chatting up fellow party-goers at a Monday night soiree hosted by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States when he gave MarketWatch some quick comments about Trump. The trade association is one of many groups hosting parties this week around the Republican National Convention, and Norquist spoke over the blaring sounds of a swing-music band.

“It’s fine, actually,” Norquist said about Trump’s plan to collapse the current seven tax brackets into four; cut the corporate tax rate to 15%; and repeal the estate tax. And he sounded optimistic that it could be melded with a recently released tax overhaul from House Republicans, which differs somewhat from Trump’s on a few issues. The House plan would, for example, cut the corporate rate to 20%.

The Unique Evil of the Left

by Llewellyn H. Rockwell Jr.
Mises.org

Is it too much to say that since the French Revolution, the left has been the source of virtually all political evils, and continues to be so in our day?

There can be no doubt that great cruelty and violence can be and have been inflicted in the name of preserving the existing order.

But when we compare even the worst enormities of the more distant past with the leftist totalitarian revolutions and total wars of the twentieth centuries, they are in general a mere blip. The entire history of the Inquisition, said Joe Sobran, barely rises to the level of what the communists accomplished on a good afternoon.

The French Revolution, and particularly its radical phase, was the classic manifestation of modern leftism and served as the model for still more radical revolutions around the world more than a century later.

Valuation Fallacies

by Jeffrey P. Snider
Alhambra Partners

Everyone knows about lies, damned lies, and statistics. The quote has been attached to Mark Twain who apparently attributed to British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. It remains among popular clichés because there is universal truth to it, a sort of caveat emptor lying in the background whenever one consumes an argument. Nowhere is that more the truth than economics and finance, disciplines almost (nowadays) entirely populated with statistics and very little else.

Given the rather extreme nature of the times, extreme statistics are more prevalent perhaps than at any other point. They run the spectrum, as do human intentions, from the purely mistake to the malicious. The better stats, as the best lies, are often difficult to discern because they contain a great deal of truth; requiring a great deal of further analysis and scrutiny to unpack the error or mistake.

IMF Slashes UK Growth Forecasts After Brexit – but Britain Will Still Outstrip Germany, France and Italy

by Peter Spence, Economics Correspondent
Telegraph.co.uk

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has slashed its forecasts for UK growth following the vote to leave the European Union, yet the British economy is still expected to grow faster than that of Germany, France and Italy next year.

UK GDP growth is now expected to slow to 1.3pc in 2017, some 0.9 percentage points below what had been pencilled in in the IMF’s previous round of forecasts. With the exception of Nigeria, the UK’s 2017 growth forecast received the sharpest downgrade of any of the 16 economies assessed by the IMF.

Maury Obstfeld, the IMF’s chief economist, said that the UK’s decision to withdraw from the EU had added “downward pressure to the world economy at a time when growth has been slow”.

Gold Holds Near Two-Week Low as Risk Appetite Rises on U.S. Data

by Abid Pasha
GoldCore

Gold has consolidated near the low of the past two weeks following on from its Brexit rally.

Having increased by 25% since the beginning of the year the pause in its rally comes as Barnabas Gan, an economist at Singapore-based Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp observes that “Market risk-on sentiment seems to have gone back” on the table, as reported by Bloomberg today.

[…] Recent positive economic data out of the U.S. including positive retails sales, consumer prices and employment statistics have lured investors back in to the equity markets and trimmed the rally in gold. However, this recent positive economic news needs to be viewed against the backdrop of it being an election year in the U.S. and the desire of the White House to create a connection between positive economic sentiment and the democratic administration.

The Powers That Be, 2016 – Lower Highs, and Lower Lows

by Andrew Hoffman
Miles Franklin

The best part of my job is watching the “PM community” – or better put, the monetary truth-seeking populace – coalesce in the war against a status quo that has destroyed global economic prospects for generations to come; enslaved the world with suffocating, unpayable debt; and destroyed the savings of countless billions. And not just the financial community, but the “99%” at large – which I considered last night, in watching Melania Trump speak at the Republican Convention. Frankly, it was as distasteful as it was laughable, to watch political “pundits” attack her – a woman who came from nothing, to a position where the entire world is watching her every move – whilst real people embraced her.

Like myself, countless millions will vote for Trump – who incidentally, will be the oldest-ever inaugurated President – because they want the status quo to die, as quickly as possible.
