Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has, as of Wednesday morning, not responded to a scathing statement from former President Donald Trump laying into the Kentucky Republican.
The statement: Trump released a lengthy statement Tuesday, days after the Senate voted to acquit him for the second time, calling on Republicans to distance themselves from McConnell and threatened to “back primary rivals” against incumbent Republican members of Congress.
“Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again,” Trump’s statement said. “Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First.”
Trump also blamed McConnell for Republicans’ defeats in the two Senate runoffs in Georgia in early January.
