Democratic Washington D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser has activated the National Guard and warned residents to avoid the downtown area in the coming days ahead of expected protests by supporters of President Trump ahead of Congress’ Jan. 6 session to certify the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election.
The story: According to some reports, Bowser has activated about 340 National Guard troops ahead of anticipated protests this week but only about 100 will be active in the city.
“I am asking Washingtonians and those who live in the region to stay out of the downtown area on Tuesday and Wednesday and not to engage with demonstrators who come to our city seeking confrontation, and we will do what we must to ensure all who attend remain peaceful,” Bowser wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
