Two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were shot in their patrol car Saturday by a suspect who, according to authorities, “opened fire without warning or provocation.”

The deputies sustained multiple gunshot wounds. They were transported to the hospital where they underwent surgery. They were “fighting for their lives,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. One of the deputies is a 24-year-old man and the other a 31-year-old woman. KABC-TV reported that they were out of surgery by 11 p.m. PT.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the deputies were sworn in 14 months ago. The female deputy is reportedly a mother of a 6-year-old.

“This is just a somber reminder that this is a dangerous job, and actions and words have consequences. Our job does not get any easier because people do not like law enforcement,” Villanueva said. “It pisses me off, it dismays me at the same time. There’s no pretty way to say it.”
