Sheriff Won’t Back Down on Comments About Black Men in Shooting: ‘I Don’t Owe You an Apology for Doing My Job’

A South Carolina sheriff is refusing to apologize for calling two black men who allegedly fired at police officers last week “idiots” and claiming the deputies “had the right to kill those people,” even though they didn’t.

The incident occurred on Sept. 13 when Tarus Mallory, 23, and Akymzee Holbert, 22, were returning from a party when they allegedly discharged a weapon in the direction of the officers.

The two were arrested and charged with attempted murder but the charges were reduced to an aggravated breach of peace and both were released from jail on Wednesday.

The two admitted firing a weapon but denied they were targeting the deputies.
