Report Shows Ever-More Distrustful Attitudes Towards Media

The media’s credibility continues to plunge as more Americans, both conservative and liberal, say they are losing trust in the information they’re presented by news organizations.

The study, which was conducted before the lockdowns and the anti-police brutality protests, was published on Thursday by the Knight Foundation and Gallup. There were a total of 20,046 American adult respondents and it took place between Nov. 8, 2019, and Feb. 16, 2020, with a margin of error of 1%.

It found that Republicans’ distrust in the media trumps that of Democrats and that almost half the respondents, despite their political affiliations, believe the media is “very biased.”

In detail: 71% of respondents who identified as Republicans and only 22% of Democrats said they have a “very” or “somewhat” unfavorable opinion of the mainstream media. On the other hand, 54% of Democrats and 13% of Republicans said they view the media in a positive light.
