CNN on Thursday published an article that appeared to shame advertisers that have not joined the ad boycott against Facebook. After critics accused the network of activism, CNN changed the article’s headline.
The report: CNN published an analysis initially titled: “These are the big brands that haven’t pulled ads from Facebook yet,” saying they have reached out to 25 of Facebook’s biggest advertisers who have not agreed to boycott the platform. Some declined to comment while others gave “non-committal responses,” the report says.
The article claims that “the vast majority of Facebook (FB)’s biggest advertisers — the ones with presumably the most leverage — have stayed quiet.” The report then acknowledges that even if Facebook’s top 100 advertisers decide to join the ad boycott, it wouldn’t make a significant dent in the company’s profits, as they make up only 6% of its ad revenue.
