The number of coronavirus cases is not a good indicator of the overall situation and the focus on the case count in the media is misleading, said Dr. Donald Yealy, the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
The bigger picture: Yealy pointed out that the hospitalization rate of coronavirus patients at UPMC is at its lowest in recent weeks. He noted that the majority of those who test positive develop mild symptoms or are asymptomatic and not accounting for these factors entirely throws off the public’s conclusions about the coronavirus pandemic in Pittsburgh and nationwide. He also suggested that fewer people who test positive now develop serious symptoms.
