Cancel Culture, Trump & How I Lost Trust in the Media | Bret Easton Ellis | Politics | Rubin Report

from The Rubin Report

Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to Bret Easton Ellis (best-selling author, screenwriter, and podcast host) about the decline of the mainstream media, cancel culture and why he is anti-anti-Trump. Bret is the author of “American Psycho,” “Less Than Zero,” and his latest hit, “White”, and he has been described as the dark laureate of Generation X. Bret discusses what it was like growing up gay in LA in the 1970s. He shares his thoughts on the gay community and how identity politics and cancel culture is harming the community. He gives examples of even gay voices like Morrissey that are being silenced for not having the correct groupthink. Bret also shares the inside story of how American Psycho was almost cancelled and a precursor to the cancel culture that we see today. Bret reveals how the media’s coverage of Trump was a political awakening for him and why he considers himself anti-anti-Trump. He shares how he thinks news institutions like the New York Times and CNN have lost their way. He also reveals the moment that he realized that the media were getting the Trump narrative wrong. Bret also shares his experience of being in a relationship with a progressive Bernie supporter. He describes how the political divide between them has brought them close to breaking up at times. He also discusses how insular the left has become in their unwillingness to listen to anyone who disagrees with them, but especially Trump supporters. And finally Bret gives his thoughts on the state of movies and how Hollywood has changed in recent years.
