Brexiteers claimed leaving the EU would help to narrow the UK’s great North-South divide

Rhetoric, spin and counter-spin – that is how the bitter referendum campaign will be remembered. But now the debate shifts to whether life outside the EU bloc really is all it was cracked up to be. Eventually, spin must give way to cold, hard facts.
There is a long list of claims waiting to be verified: “Our trade deficit with the EU will ensure they give us a fair deal”; “The UK will be more insulated from any collapse of the eurozone”; “The UK is now free to strike lucrative trade deals with the rest of the EU.”
There is another, and it’s one that I find particularly hard to swallow: that Brexit will help to narrow the UK’s great North-South divide.
