Two Capitol Police officers have filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump over the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riot.
The officers – James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby – filed the civil suit Tuesday in federal court in Washington, D.C, citing tweets posted by the former president leading up to the riot that they allege incited the deadly insurrection that left 5 people dead, including one Capitol Police officer.
The officers endured physical and emotional injuries during confrontations with rioters on Jan. 6 and are seeking damages of $75,000 each, according to the lawsuit.
“This is a complaint for damages by U.S. Capitol Police officers for physical and emotional injuries caused by the defendant Donald Trump’s wrongful conduct inciting a riot on January 6, 2021, by his followers trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election,” the lawsuit said.
