Pelosi Announces Fines for Members Avoiding Metal Detectors

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced that the House will consider introducing fines for lawmakers that refuse to comply with the security measures introduced this week.

How we got here: Following last week’s Capitol riot, the House installed metal detectors outside the chamber, asking all lawmakers to walk through them before entering the chamber. The acting Sergeant At Arms said Tuesday that lawmakers are not allowed to bring weapons and that everyone will undergo security screening. If lawmakers refuse, they might be denied entry to the chamber, the statement from the acting Sergeant At Arms warned.

Several Republican members on Tuesday expressed their opposition to having to pass through metal detectors and being searched by the Capitol police and some managed to bypass them. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) refused to show the officers what’s in her bag and Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) said: “You are creating a problem you do not understand the ramifications of.”
