Democratic Senator Criticizes Effort to Impeach Trump

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Monday slammed Democrats’ effort to impeach President Trump shortly before his term in office ends.

The story: During an appearance on Fox News, the Democratic Senator said the attempt to impeach the president was rushed and made little sense, describing the effort as “ill-advised.” He argued that lawmakers need to give investigators time to look into the matter and allow the courts to make a decision, before interjecting.

Manchin noted that the Republican party still holds a majority in the Senate and that even if the House ends up impeaching the president, Democrats lack the votes in the Senate to oust the president from office.

His remarks: “I don’t see any of that, because there will be 48, still 48 Democrats, until we seat Warnock and Senator Ossoff,” Manchin told Fox News’ Bret Baier. “So, until that happens, you need 67 votes. I think, my arithmetic, that means we have 19 Republicans. I don’t see that.”
