Trump Condemns ‘Coyotes’ on the Southern Border; Critics Take Him Literally

Some social media users took it literally when President Trump said at last night’s debate that Mexican drug cartels were using coyotes to smuggle migrant children into the U.S.

Trump’s remarks

“Children are brought here by coyotes and lots of bad people, cartels, and they’re brought here, and they used to use them to get into our country,” Trump said during the immigration segment of the debate.

[…] “We now have as strong a border as we ever had. We have over 400 miles of brand new wall, you see the numbers. And we have to let people in, but they have to come in legally.”

Trump was responding to a question by debate moderator Kristen Welker about the more than 500 migrant children whose parents still can’t be found after they had been separated while entering the U.S. illegally.
