The Minneapolis City Council complained to Police Chief Medaria Arradondo over the spike in crime in the city, even after the same Democratic-led council has called for defunding and completely restructuring policing in the city following the death of George Floyd in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) in May.
The meeting: Council members said at a police reform meeting Tuesday that they have been flooded with complaints from constituents about car races that often result in crashes, carjackings, shootings, assaults, and other crimes and they claim calls to the police have gone unanswered.
“Residents are asking, ‘Where are the police’?” said councilmember Jamal Osman, the Star Tribune reported.“That is the only public safety option they have at the moment. MPD. They rely on MPD. And they are saying they are nowhere to be seen.”
