World’s Biggest Vaccine Study Begins

A phase 3 clinical trial of a vaccine against coronavirus developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Moderna and involving 30,000 volunteers officially began Monday.

It comes after China and scientists at the British Oxford University already began testing their own vaccines in Brazil and other places hit hard by the virus.

[…] The U.S. trial, led by drug manufacturer Moderna, will give some volunteers a shot of the actual vaccine and some a placebo shot and will then track which group experiences more infections.

The funding for the trial is provided by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the NIH said in a statement Monday.
