California Was a Dream; Now it is a Nightmare

California was a dream when I was growing up. A few of my high school friends went directly to California. These were not the “best and brightest,” at least in terms of how we defined things back then. Most could not get into college. The barrier was academic not economic. Some were considered “losers” back in the day.

When I got to college I learned classmates had friends with similar dreams and similar under-performance in high school who also left for the California Dream. Over the years I often wondered whether this process was meaningful. Today, I wonder whether the magnetism that was California combined with the Darwinism of the imported residents could have hurt California. It seems plausible but there is no way to validate this issue.
