UK Growth Booms in Run-Up to EU Referendum as Brexit Jitters Have ‘Limited Effect’

The economy expanded by 0.6pc between April and June compared with the first three months of the year, when growth was 0.4pc.

The UK economy grew at a faster-than-expected pace in the second quarter, as official figures showed uncertainty in the run-up to the EU referendum had a “limited effect”.

The economy expanded by 0.6pc between April and June compared with the first three months of the year, when growth was 0.4pc.

This was stronger than economists’ expectations of 0.5pc. Compared with the same quarter a year earlier, the economy expanded by 2.2pc.

Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, said the figures showed the economy was fundamentally strong as he vowed to “take whatever action is necessary” to maintain business and consumer confidence following the Brexit vote.
